Colour choice for social distancing markings is important & the success of a floor plan relies on it. Read about colour choice for social distancing markings here.
As mentioned previously, we are receiving many sales of anything black/yellow or red/white hazard, but are they the right choice or just a quick choice?
Most people see in colours. The colours that stand out the most to our vision are not based on the colour itself but the colours around that colour. Colour differences are defined by LRV (Light Reflectance Value), these values then show a variation that the human eye can best notice. LRV is referenced by many international standards, these include BS8300:2009, this recommends an LRV variation of at least 30 points. Other examples of LRV stipulation include The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADAAG) and Guild of Architectural Ironmongery, also in America.
Although it is unlikely that you will get the LRV value for the existing floor that the social distance markers are required for, it shows that the guidance is that you must choose a colour that contrasts with the floor. As an example, most supermarkets choose very light-coloured floors that make the store appear airy. Choose a dark colour for these as black would be ideal on a light floor and far more visible than black/yellow hazard. Many work areas have dark floors to make it look cleaner with oil stains, dust etc. White works perfectly well on these.
On a side note; as an example have a look at stair nosings, you will see that any stair nosing less than 20 years old will be a plain colour, black/yellow and red/white hazard nosings stopped being used in the 1990s. There are some visual impairments that cannot handle something as technical as sharp chevrons, the designs become invisible to them.
Sorry to get technical but I want to be realistic, it counts to make the right colour choice for social distancing, and we should look at what colour the floor is before we start putting something on.
